Heather’s Journal

September 2009

So, this is my second week of High School, and so far it’s been very disappointing. I thought that when I came to this school everyone would be super nice, and accept me into their clans. Well. I THOUGHT WRONG!!! There are like, a million different clans and I just can’t seem to fit into any of them! I want to be popular, but how am I supposed to fit in, if everyone is so mean!! I’ve made one friend named Melinda so far, and she’s not in any clans and is very depressed. All I want to do is get into a clan and have more than one depressed friend!

By examining all of the different clans, I’ve noticed that the Jocks are pretty popular, but they only talk about their injuries and that “radical” play that they made in that one game!!! I’m definitely NOT an athlete, so the Jocks are probably not the clan for me. There are also the foreign exchange students who wear fashionable clothes and talk in their sweet little accents. People who aren’t even foreign exchange students are in this clan, such as this really popular girl named Rachel. Oh sorry, it’s actually Rachelle. I’m not really into faking accents and smoking candy cigarettes, so foreign exchange students are probably not the group for me. But, the most popular group in this school is the cheerleaders. They walk around in matching outfits and hook up with all of the guys on the football team. Then they act all perfect and suck up to the teachers. They are sweet little angles by day, but crazy party girls by night. Ummmm, that’s probably not the group for me! Oh well, maybe I’ll find a decent clan someday :(

Wait, I almost forgot!!! There is a clan that I might fit into!!! The Martha’s! They wear stylish color coordinated outfits and do community service projects for fun. Everyone looks up to them, and they are often seen as role models for many girls. Yay!! This is so exciting!! Maybe I’ll be able to join their clan!! But, I don’t know if they would approve of Melinda. Oh, well! I’ll do anything to get fit in!!

Well, I’ll make sure to keep you updated on my social status!!

Pledge

The Assignment

In the novel Speak, the rights of the individual to express truth and the consequences that may come from that truth, is questioned.  To evaluate and discuss what this truly means, our class studied our own nation’s Pledge of Allegiance and defined what was being promised through this pledge.  We then used this information to create our own pledges and reflect on the potential pledges of the characters found in Speak.

My Pledge

I pledge allegiance to my family, of Sheboygan Falls, WI. And to their feelings, which I will respect. One household, under God, lovingly. With loyalty, kindness, and happiness for all.

My Reflection

There are many choices that you have to make in everyday life, and choosing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance is an important one. It’s not against the law to refuse to recite the Pledge and freedom of speech gives us this choice. People that are from other countries and aren’t true Americans might not have that desire, and that’s fine. But, in my case, I always recite the Pledge because it shows my loyalty to our country and my love of America.
