I found a very important scene in “The Old Man and the Sea”. The old man in “The Old Man and the Sea”, will do anything it takes to get a fish. He is determined, strong willed, and does not give up. In a certain scene, the old man hooks a fish, and for four hours the fish is there, but he cannot bring him into the boat. He is amazed by the strength of this fish. He them makes a comparison of the fish to himself. “Then he began to pity the great fish that he had hooked. He is wonderful and strange and who knows how old he is, he thought. Never have I had such a strong fish nor one who acted so strangely. Perhaps he is too wise to jump. He could ruin me by jumping or by a wild rush. But perhaps he has been hooked many times before and he knows that this is how he should make his fight. He cannot know that it is only one man against him, nor that it is an old man. But what a great fish he is and what will he bring in the market if the flesh is good. He took the bait like a male and he pulls like a male and his fight has no panic in it. I wonder if he has any plans or if he is just as desperate as I am?” (48,49). The old man can understand how the fish must feel, because he is only fighting to stay alive. Throughout the main tells of his aches and pains, and the hardships of growing old, but he was “born for the sea”, and he will do what it takes to stay there, just as the fish will.
The old man in “The Old Man and the Sea”, is a very incredible man. He is strong willed, he never gives up, and he is also a very kind man. He spends all his time out in his boat, fishing in the sea. He eats what he can, he sleeps only when necessarily, and he never gives up on pulling in more and more fish. He feels the aches and pains of age, but he never wishes to rest. He doesn’t want to rest. He believes he was “born for the sea”, and that that is where he belongs. I’ve never known someone in real life with such determination for what they do, and that makes me admire the old man. He feels that he is fortunate to be doing what he loves, and that he should take advantage of it. The old man is a great, heroic character for readers to read about, because he will teach you what true determination is, and how to never give up on what you want.
The old man in “The Old Man and the Sea” has a companion that fishes with him sometimes. This companion is a young boy that lives at home with his parents, but comes out to sea sometimes with the old man. The young boy sometimes helps to take care of the old man, and they both have each other to listen to. Whenever the old man in alone, and the young boy is not there, he is lonely. For example, one time the old man hooks a fish, and still four hours later he cannot pull the fish in. He is amazed by this fish, and wondering why it is so difficult to bring in this fish. He thinks multiple times “I wish the boy were here”, or “I wish the boy could see this”. Even though he believes he was born for the sea, he still gets lonely, and he doesn’t deny it either. He is an old man with no family. The only family he has is the sea. The young boy is a great friend for him, because they take care of each other, and when they have no one else, and they can always think of the other and know they will see each other again soon.
Think about your dream, or your favorite activity. Is it reading? Then the library may be like another home to you right? A place where you feel safe, and where you just feel right. To a singer, the stage is there home; and to a teacher, the classroom is there home. The old man in “The Old Man and the Sea”, believes he was born for the sea. The boat that he fishes on is just like a home to him. He has no other home, and this is where he feels safe, and he feels like what he is doing is right. He doesn’t know of anything other than his boat, the sea, and his fish. That is what normal is to him, and he wouldn’t trade it in the world. He loves his boat, and the sea, they are what make him happy; and even though he doesn’t know of any other world or any other lifestyle, I don’t think he would want to.
For English 10, as a conclusion to Romeo and Juliet, we have to post two of our pieces of genre work. I chose to post my poem, and my advice column.
I have found the perfect man for my daughter to marry, but for some reason she absolutely refuses to marry him. I just want her to have the best life possible, and she refuses to even say a simple thank you. She won’t talk to my wife or me, and she won’t marry the man I have chosen. She says she will kill herself if she has to marry him. How do I make her trust that I am trying to do the right thing? And how do I make her marry him?
-Sincerely, Desperate Dad
Dear Bad Father,
It sounds like you are stuck in quite a sticky situation. You are trying to provide your daughter with a young man who will be respectful, kind, helpful, and loyal to your young daughter her whole life, but she is being “ungrateful’ and not accepting this man. Now she won’t talk to you, and she is upset all the time. How do you get her to marry the young man? Maybe she doesn’t like him, or maybe she likes someone else. Perhaps her and this boy have had a conflict before that you don’t know about. As for getting her to marry him, I guess there is no way you can force her to marry anyone. You say she’ll say kill herself right? Well, would you rather have her married to someone of her own choice (Which whom you don’t approve of) and happy? Or would you rather have your daughter dead? It’s up to you.
Struggles of Love
Love is a miracle,
love is a disaster.
Love is something to cherish,
love is something to hate.
Love is something to savor,
love is something to disdain.
Love is something to enjoy,
love is something to suffer through.
In the end outcome could be good or bad,
you have to decide…
Is love worth the struggles?
The topic that I focused on throughout reading Romeo and Juliet was love. It was portrayed throughout the story in many ways. There was romantic love, family love, and love from friends. The main love in the story was of course Romeo and Juliet’s young love. When doing the genre pieces I focused mostly on their love. Romeo and Juliet’s parents also claim to love them, and then of course there’s the nurse who dearly loves Juliet. The reason I chose to the topic love, is because I feel that the whole story revolves around love.
I chose to post my advice column because it represents a father’s protective love for their daughter, and romantic love between young teenagers. The father thinks that choosing the man for Juliet is the right thing to do, because she has her whole life ahead of her, and he wants her to be with someone that will help her lead a good life. Juliet on the other hand, knows who she wants to be with the rest of her life, but she cannot tell her father because the two families have had a long time feud. This advice column relates the end of the story as well; Juliet did in fact end up committing suicide. If Lord Capulet would have respected Juliet’s opinions and feelings, there wouldn’t have been such a tragic ending of two young lives, and other lives as well. I chose to post my poem because throughout the story of Romeo of Juliet, they go through these struggles. They think that in the end they may just somehow have a good ending and live happily ever, but of course as you know that doesn’t happen. It might leave people thinking; in the end, was it even worth their struggle?
I have changed quite a bit as a reader while reading this story, because I had to focus a lot more on trying to follow the story; because of the Shakespearean language. I learned a whole new language basically, which was really interesting. At first it was irritating, but once we got the packets that had the modern English also, I was able to start understanding more of the words. I responded significantly to many parts of the play because I know exactly what Romeo and Juliet are going through. I changed a bit as a thinker because it was crazy how much I could relate to the story. I thought the story of Romeo and Juliet was very well written, and thoughtful as well. The story makes all of this seem so possibly and ordinary, and in all reality it is. Being a resident of Sheboygan Falls, most of us aren’t exposed to so much violence, but after reading this you can see how one little thing can turn into a huge tragedy.
Did you ever read a book series that kept you in constant suspense? If you have, you know that makes reading a book so much more fun, interesting, entertaining, and intriguing. If you haven’t, you must. It (Along with many other reasons) is what kept me reading The Hunger Games Trilogy. The third book, Mockingjay, was my favorite of the three books. This book, along with the other two in the trilogy, are written by Suzanne Collins, who is in my and many other’s opinion, a fantastic author.
The Hunger Games trilogy is set in the future, in a place called Panem; which was once known as North America. In Panem, there are twelve districts, districts one and two being the most powerful, and twelve being the weakest. Once a year, there is a brutal and cruel battle between the districts. One boy and one girl from each district must go into an arena, and kill each other off, until there is a final victor. As if this wasn’t bad enough, the whole thing is broadcasted on television, and it is like a big entertaining show to the citizens of Panem, also the Capitol. Oh god, the capitol. The capitol is the place that rules the entire country, and made the idea for “The Hunger Games”. They are so cruel to the districts, even the powerful ones, and force kids into this bloodbath, even very young children.
The first two books are about one of the Hunger Games, in which the main character Katniss Everdeen is a participant. The third book however, is about something called the Quarter Quell. The Quarter Quell happens every 25 years, and all the victors from the Hunger Games come together, and must compete against each other in a Hunger Games of their own. There are some people that are as old as their nineties that have to come back and battle it out to the finish. Like they even have a chance of winning…oh god, how I hate that capitol. Another major part of “Mockingjay”, is how Katniss is trying to kill the president of Panem, President Snow, and trying to get revenge on the capitol for everything that they have forced their country into.
There is also some romance in this book, and the other two books in the trilogy. Another big part of this book, is Katniss trying to figure out her feelings for Peeta, and not to mention Gale. Gale and she had been friends since they were very young, they were like family. Peeta was the popular one at school that she never thought would like her, but one day when she was digging through the garbage can trying to find food at his parents bakery, his mom had yelled at her to go away. Peeta had come out and given her bread, and took the beating from his mother that followed. Katniss always thought of Peeta as being a generous and kind person after that. And guess what happened? In the first book, they were the boy and girl picked to compete in the Hunger Games. They were going to have to kill each other. (If you haven’t figured it out yet, they both won the Hunger Games…but I won’t tell you how they managed it, and ruin it for you) There is a lot of romance actually, when there isn’t the gore, blood, violence, and politics.
I think the large idea of this book, and the whole trilogy in general, is how one capitol, or one person, can be so powerful and so controlling. The author shows how no matter how much these people didn’t want to compete in the games, they really had no choice. If they refused, they would be killed by capitol workers. Either way they would be killed, so they might as well compete and try to stay alive. These “games” that the capitol created hurt so many people, end so many lives, and yet it’s just fun and games to them. In the last book, “Mockingjay”, the author shows how the citizens were finally trying to fight back, and stand up for themselves. I won’t tell you if they succeed, you’ll have to read to find out yourself.
I rate this book a 4 ½ out of 5, because just like the other two books in the trilogy, it keeps you in constant suspense, there is romance, action, conflict, a little horror, and also humor mixed in. It is written by an amazing author, and it was like nothing I had ever read before.
I do not want to say good-bye to my beloved blog, but unfortunately I have to. This year, I enjoyed being able to look at my friends and peers blogs SO much, and being able to make posts on my own blog. I loved commenting on other people’s blogs, and getting comments on mine. It was a good way to let others know what you think of their writing, and to know what others think of your own. I liked reading other people’s posts to be able to see other people’s writing styles compared to mine. I liked seeing people’s opinions on books, or on the topics for cyberjournals. I liked being able to put my writing on my blog for the world to see, because I know that I am a good writer, and I know that I improved a lot on my writing this year. I hope that it showed in my blog posts as they went on throughout the year. I have also started to care a lot more about my work since I know that many people will see it. I like writing long posts because, well; first reason is I LOVE writing, but the second reason is that it shows I am serious about what I am typing, and that I am not just doing it to get the assignment done. I mean everything that I am saying, and I feel passionate about whatever I put on my blog. The entire blogging experience was amazing to me, and I wish that we could continue doing it throughout the rest of our years in English. But unfortunately, we cannot. So, good-bye blogs!!! I will miss you!
Call me crazy, but I just felt the very urgent need to make this blog post. It is about a book that EVERY ONE seems to be so very fond of nowadays. I can understand why they fell under it’s spell of love and romance, but I still rated it a two out of five stars. This book would be (drumroll please) DEAR JOHN! It was really at first, but then something happens. (I will just say it because if you listen to this post you will not read the book and then I don’t have to worry about giving anything away) Savannah and John break up. I really hate how it happens because it is so abrupt. One moment John is all happy and in love and then he gets a letter from Savannah saying she is in love with someone else. I say like “Okaaay”. Then the last 75 or so pages of the book is about John and the war and his sick dad…and it was really boring. Honestly, I skimmed those last 75 or so pages. When I got to the end of the book, after skimming, I knew everything that I had just skimmed. The end of the book was just a bunch of useless information really. I think that the book would have been much better overall if John and Savannah had stayed together. It was a very good beginning, but a very weird, abrupt, in my opinion, terrible ending.
I have learned a lot this year in CyberEnglish9. Just a few of the many things I learned are how to work well with a partner, how to be confident in my own writing skills, how to improve my writing, and not to mention poetry terms, literary terms, how to make blogs, hyperlinks, and wikis.
I am much, much more confident in my writing. I was pretty nervous about having a webpage at the beginning of the year, but now I really enjoy it, and I hope that I will be able to continue blogging next year. I would continue blogging this summer, but unfortunately I do not have the internet at home. I hope when I come back to school I will be able to keep blogging so that Cyber English doesn’t feel lost forever.
I have a lot more technical skills now than I had at the beginning of the year. These skills will be very helpful to me throughout the rest of high school, and throughout my whole life; because everything is done online now. With technology booming it is important to know your stuff or you will be living under a rock. (Just like people think I do because I don’t have the internet…)
I feel that I have become a much better writer throughout this year. I have always been a great writer, but being able to have a blog and show people my work has helped make me more confident, which has helped me to work harder and make my writing even more intriguing. Feedback from my peers and my teacher has helped me to become more confident, which makes me want to make more posts, which keeps me writing; and then I can get better and better.
I have also learned a lot more about English itself like literary terms, poetry terms, how to make hyperlinks, how to find themes in books, and much, much more. All of this will help me personally because I want to be an English teacher when I grow up, so the more I know the better. Knowing all this will also help me in my future high school classes and in college if I decide to go. (Yes I know I will have to go to college if I want to be a teacher…)
Having a web page affects how I learn a lot, and in a good way. Being able to see others writing helps me to learn writing techniques from them, and see how other people write compared to my own writing. At the beginning of the year it affected how I wrote in a bad way, because I was afraid of what people would think. But now it affects how I write in a good way; I always make sure that there are no spelling or grammar errors. And I always make sure to be myself!
This whole year and this class have helped me so much! Thank you Ms. D!!!
Blogs and email and wiki, oh my! All of which I was able to use this year in this class, and all of which I enjoyed using very much. Before being in CyberEnglish9, I had never used any of these before, and didn’t know how to use them. I feel much more confident with my technical skills now than before being in this class. I think that this class will definitely help me in the future, because nowadays everything is done online, so it’s important to know all your options, and to know how to use all the resources that are provided for you on the web.
I don’t have the internet at home, (I’ll bet if you didn’t know that about me already that you gasped; most people do) and that is why I had never used these resources before. Call me old fashioned, but it seems like the internet is ruling the world sometimes, and it’s kind of scary, because pretty soon there will be absolutely no need for mailmen, with all the emailing and online banking and online taxes and online everything!
Sorry…got off topic. But like I said, I feel much more confident with my technical skills. This class was great for me to take, because now I know what I was missing out on. I don’t know how often I wish use these resources again in the future, but it’s nice to know how to use them.
