It’s really important to me that we get to choose our own books for independent reading because then we get to enjoy the type of books that we like to read. Some genres of books I don’t really like to read and if we had to read those kinds of books I most likely wouldn’t enjoy it as much as I like reading the genres of books that I choose. By choosing my own books it has helped me appreciate reading more because then I know that I will want to keep reading more books like the ones I choose instead of not reading anymore because its not a book I wanted to read. For example in past years teachers have made me read certain books that I didn’t want to read and I never ended up reading it anyways. But as I’ve read more books throughout the years I have adventured onto reading more books of different genres that I usually wouldn’t read.

So, Ashley, you’re saying that if more teachers trusted their students with choosing what to read, the students would eventually get to the teachers’ goals: read more, read a wider variety of genres, and read for better and deeper understanding. I think I mostly agree with you, and like you suggest, if a book is assigned and a student doesn’t read it, then nothing is accomplished, right?
