    Modern day technology experiment

    2013 - 04.30

Throughout the night of no modern day technology, I committed myself as much as I could. Some things I had to use like a car to drive home from school, and also I had to use a stove when I helped my mother with dinner. I really enjoyed having no technology like my phone because sometimes I feel like I am missing out on things because I use my phone too much. I enjoyed being able to have some family time with my parents and being able to go outside and help with anything that needed to be done.  I think that Emerson and Thoreau would act quite pleased with my commitment to no technology, they would give advice on how to enjoy nature more. From this experience I learned that the world around me has so many things that go unnoticed. While I had no technology I tried to notice the small things that were outside, and thought of so many things that people take for granted. I noticed more details to conversations around me because I was not distracted by technology. The world’s details that I noticed more were the sounds that nature made like little birds chirping and the stream flowing in my backyard. While I had no technology I took a walk outside and noticed more things about my yard , like where my stream leads to, how many trees I have in my yard, and also the different color of the taller grass leading to the side of my house. I noticed that the world’s top priorities are mostly around technology and realized how much we all take for granted from nature since it is such a beautiful thing. The most important thing in my life is my family, throughout this projected I realized how much time is wasted while I am with them because I am on my phone or watching TV. This project made me think of how much more time I spent with my family before I went on the internet so often and did not use a phone, and it made me miss it.

    Nutritional

    2011 - 03.08

While we were studying about food I was wondering what kind of intake I was making in my daily life and if it was healthy or not. When we made the chart about what food and how many calories and fat was in it I learned that I was under the usually amount of calories. I have been eating pretty healthy but you don’t know what is all in your food so I guess I don’t know for sure. But I learned that I wasn’t eating a lot of meat, and that I had a regular close to the amount need diet though. I think I learned a lot in this lesson about eating and seeing what is really happening to our food and that you don’t know what you are eating.

    Out West

    2010 - 12.10

Recently I took a vacation to Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore and Colorado. I took this vacation last summer with my family and it was for 2 weeks. We took our motor home but it was a really long drive but we stopped a lot on the way. We went to Colorado because some of my family lives there and we stopped to visit them. When I stopped at Mt. Rushmore we walked around there for the day and went to the light show later. I didn’t really like the light show because it got really boring and just talked about history the whole time. We stayed at the campground and I met some new friends. Almost every place we stopped at I met someone. I really liked stopping at Yellowstone and seeing all of the animals. We stayed in Yellowstone for 5 days but the thing I liked most about Yellowstone was the waterfalls along the way and behind the campgrounds. We also went to Bear Country Usa and I liked all of the little cubs that they trained. Colorado was fun also because I got to see two of my cousins I have not seen in a long time. Another cousin went with us and I enjoyed that because I could never go that long with just my sister and brother and parents. Next year we are going again and spending my birthday in Yellowstone I think it will be really fun and I am excited.

    Internet Safety

    2010 - 09.25

    Internet Safety

I worked with Elodie H for our internet safety project. Here is what we learned about internet safety after visiting four safety sites.

First we learned that you should never post too much information on social sites or any other website. To find out whether you may be posting too much information, you could ask yourself “Would I be comfortable with a stranger reading this?” If the answer is no, you are posting too much information!

A second thing you should always watch out for is identity theft. If somebody could reach your profile and steal your information, you might be at risk. That is another reason you should always monitor what you are posting.

You should always monitor what your child is doing on the computer. They could possibly be contacted by sexual predators. If you find any inappropriate images or websites on your computers history, you should immediately talk to them about it.

When you are on a social website, you could be subjected to online bullying. There are several types of violation; physical safety: where your freedom from physical harm is being violated, Psychological safety: where your freedom from cruelty, harassment, and exposure to potentially disturbing material is violated, reputational and legal safety, Identity, property, and community safety.
