what are your motives…?

NOTE: This is not meant to be preaching to anyone in public, nor to change anyone’s views of their religion, it is not meant to be offensive. We were given the task to write freely, and this is what fell on my heart.

What are our reasons for doing what we do, for believing what we believe, going where we go.

There is no doubt in my mind that when a soldier is deployed across seas they know why they are going, to keep us in America safe giving us the freedom that so many of us take for granted, what many of us do not realize is freedom isn’t free.

And neither is our religion, i understand the constitution states that we have the freedom of religion. But if we look deeper there is a small cost to truly have this profound faith. We have to turn from the world, we have to start looking, and thinking different based on convictions we feel. No longer do we watch certain shows, or think certain things, or dwell on the negative things in life.

Galatians 1:10 says

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Too often we try to please the fellow man, or try to seek acceptance so that we “fit in” or so that we might be popular. We change the way we act around certain people just to seem cool for the moment. We disregard our values, or our morals/ what we know is right and wrong just to feel that moment of completeness.

Matthew 6:1-18

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

do not focus on getting rewards, We live in the world where almost anywhere we go, there is a reward card. Where if you spend this much , you can get this..  Or you go to piggly wiggly and you get a special price for using your card. Nowadays there is a reward card for practically everywhere. We spend a certain amount in hopes of a reward, I feel like this type of thinking has drifted into the church setting, many people may give, whether its money, or its a service with the mindset that God will somehow bless them, instead of just doing our part because we know we should.  Its says in that scripture that we shouldn’t let our left hand know what our right hand is doing, in another sense we shouldn’t have to compare ourselves to others, we shouldn’t make giving a contest. Because then why are we giving at all there is no positive motive. Also it could mean that we should not be dwelling on what we could receive in return we should want to help out without wanting something in return.

When we go to a church function whether its a rally, or a camp and we decide to go just because a friend of ours is going; why are we going? Where is our motive; are we going to have a life changing experience, or are we going to have fun and meet friends, or anything besides going to feel God.  I feel too often we take this experiences for granted myself included. When we go to these events do we truly go into them with the expectation that God is going to do something great? Or do we go in with the mindset that its just another church service.

Do we go to church because we have to or do we go because we want to…

now i want that to sink in, and i want all of us to really think about this, when we go to church do we do it because we have to or do we go because we want to.  Remembering that Christ died for us and that he took up our cross and died for our sins, so that we may have a chance to live eternally with him.

I don’t want any of us to be standing on the fence, easily pushed or pulled in any direction, We have that chance right now to declare that we are going to put our motives in check and that we are going to do what is right. We have the chance to make things right with our God.

These alters are open, I want you all to come up and make things right with God. I want you all to choose your path, who are you going to serve, and you better know why you’re serving them. Friend, i am telling you today that this world isn’t going to last forever, so you better get your shoes on, and be ready for the time of his coming.

Art Reflection– Jesus Christ before the High Priest

When we look at this painting first we we are immediately drawn to the candle, it creates a thought of seriousness in the work of art. By creating the shadows and really zeroing in on this one specific area, making us not worry about what might be around them, but really focusing on this one area of time. Then after we look at the candle we are drawn to the two persons that are illuminated in the painting. The individual on the left is meant to be the high priest, you can really feel his anger toward the other individual Jesus.

The pointed finger on the high priest represents anger. It makes us really feel the persecution that Jesus felt. This anger toward Jesus can still be seen in todays society as well. In the Bible it states that in Revelation 2:10, “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.” This is telling us of a prophesy that just as Jesus Christ had gone through persecution we as Christians will endure in the end times. We will be tempted and tested and thrown in jail for believing in Christ coming. Its hard to think about, but it’s a way to separate those who call themselves Christian’s [CHRISTlike people] from those who truly are.

When we look at Jesus’ face to me it looks almost like a tired look. It looks like he feels bad though at the same time, that even though he suffers all these accusations and all of the lies sent against him, he will ultimately still be dying for even their sins, so that they may have eternal life, whether they want it or not. In todays world, when accusations are sent against us we tend to anger ourselves, or we fight with someone, but we are told to in John 13: 34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Even though we may have enemies we are still to show them the love of Christ. We are still supposed to show them that God loves them no matter what. We are supposed to forgive as He has forgiven us.

The colors that are in here are very specific as well, when we look at the color white we typically think pure, perfect, holy, innocent. All of these words represent Jesus, he came to this earth to pay the price of all of our sins. When we look at the brown robe covering the back of Jesus it could be used as a metaphor of the sins, and the burdens he chose to carry. Mainly because when we think of the color brown, we think dirty, like mud, or something that needs to get clean. Again showing the representation of just how much God loves us, that he would manifest himself in flesh and be called Jesus and ultimately die for our sins, something that many of us take for granted.

When we look at the accusers in the background. We see arrogant smerks, we see a sort of happiness on their faces, as if they will be rewarded for this Jesus they brought before the High Priest.  But I also find it amazing that the author has them darker than the other individuals, it shows that they were important to the situation and added to it, but the author did not want to focus on them but focus on how the High Priest was so angry with Jesus.

Overall this piece is meant for us to evaluate our lives, as well as make us really think about our faults. When we get upset, do we argue, or do we take the time to find out the situation and try to solve it peacefully? Do we show love for everyone even if we are being accused of something? Do we show love to our enemies? Do we bear false witness of an act that “has” been committed? Do we lie? Do we cheat? Do we steal? The answers that we put with these questions are astounding and are upsetting. Why do we do what we do, and how do we change it? Well the answer to that you cannot find on your own, you need to search deeper into His word, and the answer will be found.

RE: Love from Head to Toe

Love from Head to Toe - http://thisibelieve.org/essay/10711/

Lorena Templeton Querns believes that love is a choice and that it can come through everyday life and actions. Many times we are put into situations where we have to care for people that we do not really know. Or maybe Jesus will answer a prayer of ours in a way that we weren’t expecting. But that doesn’t mean that we stand by, and disregard the countless blessings in which we are given. Querns’ mothers love for he adopted son Tyler seemed to be less unconditional than it was for her biological daughters. She learned that through time, and through daily motherly duties, she grew that love for Tyler that was missing.

RE: Staying Close

Staying Close – Jimmy Taylor

http://thisibelieve.org/essay/3816/

Jimmy Taylor tells us a story of how love can really shine through us, and sometimes we feel that we love people more than people love us. She tells us that through her sickness he husband showed strength and unconditional love. We all need to learn that even though we may be physically and mentally weak, we need to make sure that we stay strong in the midst of a struggle, stay strong in the midst of a trial for God will get us through it!

RE: Why are we Here?

Why Are we Here?- Dale Long

http://thisibelieve.org/essay/260/

We continually find ourselves asking, ” why am i here?” or “What is my purpose?” Many times we rely on science for answers, some such as Mr. Long feel that we need to continue to advance in the world in order to find our place in life. Many times we rely on faith or science before they decide when to advance their character. Its important however to make sure that we continue to believe that advancing is crucial to human development.

RE: Love On Four Feet

Love on Four Feet -Sarah Culp Searles

http://thisibelieve.org/essay/28061/

Love is something unconditional, and something that is precious; many of us have pets and we don’t always feel as though our pets love us. Sarah Culp Searles teaches us that we spend lots of money on our pets, and that when we are going through a rough time in our lives that we get love from our pets. Even if we do not feel it all the time. Love doesn’t allow   us to be heart broken, or sad. Because love is happiness, and helps us realize that even if we are going through a rough time you always have love.

RE: The Perfect Merge

The Perfect Merge

http://thisibelieve.org/essay/4800/

We all know about the stresses of merging with traffic. We all know that life may not always be fair, but we do know that its important to be considerate of others and care about others, so according to Lori Vermeulen if through life we see a window of opportunity to make something happen, we should definitely take that time, because it may not be there forever. Its important that we do not allow time to pass because we do not want to be left behind.

I Want a Wife – Judy Brady

Questions for discussion:

Judy Brady makes assumptions to whom her audience will be. I think she was gearing this toward adult couples, or adults in general, I don’t feel she pin points one specific gender, because I feel that both genders can be taught to think about their relationship habits through Brady’s satirical piece I Want a Wife.

I feel as though when the narrator begins to list off all of the reasons why she would like a wife, she is trying to tell us as the audience what she goes through as a wife, all of the chores, all of the needs and wants from the husband. It seems as though she is making it seem as though the husband wants this prize wife, but he doesn’t want any of the responsibility that it upholds. He doesn’t want to cater to her needs at all, in fact, it’s the exact opposite.

I feel as though it could apply to today’s world still, because there are still situations where the wife feels like all she is, is a slave; almost as if she has not meaning or purpose.

Through the use of satire, specifically symbolism and irony, Judy Brady makes the argument that men usually want a wife to take care of his needs rather than care for her needs. Brady uses the “wife” as the strongest symbol throughout this piece, and uses her reasoning in an ironic way. Brady shows us her understanding of what it means to be a wife in general society, and teaches us how some men choose to view their wives.

Brady’s purpose for writing this text I believe was to teach society that although we may view wives as more of a possession rather than a human being. She also is trying to tell us that sometimes she just wants a break, or would like a “wife” of her own, “My God, who wouldn’t want a wife?” She has been through this situation before, and uses ethos to show the audience her understanding, and her credibility for what she uses as her philosophy.

I feel as  though Brady used, symbolism, irony, ethos, and pathos effectively throughout the text, because she had her evidence, she had reasoning, and it created a wonderful satirical piece.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What drove Judy Brady to write this, was there a specific event going on at the time?
  2. Does she resent having these responsibilities?
  3. How would she change the world’s view on this topic?

I Have Dreams

Growing up I was a United Church of Christ member, I knew who God was but I never really understood what having the faith meant. In April of 2012 I joined the Pentecostals of Sheboygan County. Joining that church is perhaps the best decision that I have made in my entire life.  I learned what it meant to be a Christian, we have a slogan that says, “ We Serve, He Saves” In that we truly believe that If we do our best to do the work of God, and we serve Him the best way possible, that we will be saved by Him.

I once had a dream of becoming a Social Worker, I wanted to “Change the World” or “Give Back” all of the same old stuff we hear day in and day out.  I went to God, and I prayed. I prayed for guidance in finding what he wants me to do with my life. In that he came to me and said, “ David, I want you to serve me through Music.” In that a name of a college began to pop into my head “Urshan College”. This is an Apostolic Bible College, Created under the Doctrine of the Pentecostals.  I knew at that moment I was to apply to that college for Music Ministry, and I know that I will never look back, for God has a plan in this. He wants me to serve Him through music, and I will.

My plans after graduation are to open a private lesson studio, where I can teach students, Christian Contemporary music, praise songs, and Classical Music. I never listen to the main stream music of today, for when I lift my voice, it will be for Jesus, not for a rap song, or anything else.

In this life I have dreams, I don’t plan to be on top, I plan to do what’s right, follow God, Serve Him, and allow myself to be saved by my creator!
