I read a few books this quarter, mostly mysteries. I don’t think I really liked reading this genre. I think it took my too long to get into these books. The books I mostly enjoy reading outside of class would be books that teach me life lessons. I really enjoy learning about what to expect when graduating high school and college. I find it fascinating how much you could learn just my reading a book. The books that I would say least interest me are romance. I really cannot stand them. I like books that I could relate too.
The teacher didn’t pick any books out for us yet this quarter but I have heard that they read Speak as a freshman in high school and I have already read this book and I absolutely love it. The day I started that book is the day I finished it. So I would say I like books that the teacher picks out for us.
I don’t think I chose the right genre of books this quarter but I feel if I sit down with my teacher and ask her if she has any recommendations for me. The reason I think this is because when I finished reading the books I felt a sense of relief, and I don’t think I should have felt that.
I learned a few things this quarter about my self as a reader. I learned that I should choose books because they are interesting to me not because the cover looks intriguing. To improve as a reader, I will try to ask my librarian for a few books from different genres and read a short bit out of them to see if I would like to read this genre.
Reading for me has two sides a hard side and an easy side. The hard side over powers and sort of controls which books I am able to read. So I guess you could say that I am a picky reader. But as always there is a silver lining to every hardship. This is the side that is weaker for me and I want to work harder at. I don’t want reading to be a challenge for me I want it to be something where it will come naturally to me.
The way I choose a book is by process of which cover appeals to me the most. Which I know is not a good process and that it should stop because just about 7 times out of 10 I quit reading the book before I make it to chapter 3. The reason for this is that I get bored or don’t understand fully what I am reading. But sometimes I get books that I can’t put down. The reason for this is that I took the time to actually look for a book instead of just plain picking up basically “blind folded”.
I can put Books into two categories, good and bad. In my opinion what makes a book bad is one you don’t understand because it’s out of your reading level. Or it’s not a book that appeals to you positively. On the other hand there are good books believe it or not. A good book in my opinion is one you fully understand. It is also a book that you feel you never want to put down.
I understand that during the period of cyber English we do a lot of reading online. I also understand that with the new technology you can get books downloaded to your device of some sort. I do believe that this is reading because it has an author. And often times if you can’t find the book at your local library you might be able to find it online. But I do also believe in books. Actual books I personally like reading better when I have the book right in my hand because of the fact that you can read without having to use electricity. In my own opinion I would say that I would never be able to read on the computer for more than five minuets without wanting to shut it out. I have actually tried this theory we read a book in class and after school I went home to read it so I fully understood it but I couldn’t read past the first paragraph.
