Stubborn as a Rock

on Jan13 2011

Elizabeth Bennet’s bold personality makes her stand out from other girls from her time.  Her family, friends, and especially people of a higher rank believe her to be a very strange girl.  “You give your opinion very decidedly for so young a person” (143).  Lady Catherine de Bourgh found it very odd that Elizabeth wouldn’t give her direct answer like she is used to.  Her nephew, Mr. Darcy, also thought it was strange how she was the only woman who wasn’t afraid of hurting his feelings.  She bluntly refused his offer of marriage because of the prejudice she felt against him.   “I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed to marry” (166).  Elizabeth made her opinion of Mr. Darcy right away, before actually getting to know him.  She is blinded with her own judgments to see what a gentleman Mr. Darcy really is.

What Doesn’t Kill Us, Makes Us Stonger

In art class Melinda kept messing up her trees, but by making those mistakes she eventually got it right. Her art teacher, Mr. Freeman, told the class that “art is about making mistakes and learning from them” (122).  This is a lot like life and how people should learn from their mistakes.

Melinda made the mistake of not telling people about what really happened the night of Kyle Rodger’s party.  At one point in the book Andy Evans comes into the art room she just stands there like “a deer frozen in the headlights of a tractor trailer.”  This is an example of how she let “IT” win by not telling anyone what he did to her and letting it control her life.

Throughout the book Melinda learned that there are people who still care about her and that what happened to her has made her stronger.  When Andy, tried to rape her again, she finally realized that she has the courage to say no and stop him.  By the end of the book, Melinda learned that she has the ability to speak.

The Not So Evil Twin

on Jan10 2011

Where people are from, doesn’t define who they are.  Lia Milthorpe plays a role in an ancient prophecy about twin sisters. In this prophecy she is the “Gate”, the one who can bring the “Souls” from the Otherworld, and her sister, Alice is the “Guardian”, the one who has to stop the Souls from coming.  Even though Lia is on the bad end of the prophecy, doesn’t mean she’s a bad person.  “In you I see something… true that has been present ever since you were a child” (122).  Lia has always had a kind heart as opposed to Alice who does things that are sometimes cruel.  The prophecy might have labeled her as the evil twin but in her heart she is a good to everyone.

Cyber Journal: December!

on Jan7 2011

A major challenge that I have in CyberEnglish9 is trying to stay focused on what I’m doing.  Sometimes I find myself struggling to think about what I’m suppose to be writing about for a certain blog or other writing.  It also doesn’t help that I have class in the morning and I’m still trying to wake up.  If I can’t focus on a specific thing I have to do, I save it for study hall later in the day.  This way I have fully woken up and can think a little more clearly.  Also I do some work at home if I don’t have enough time in school.
