Blind, standing in front of a mirror.
Posted on Monday, May 2nd, 2011 at 9:50 amIn the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Aunt Alexandra doesn’t seem to accept Scout for who she wants to be. It reminds me so much of school where people don’t accept others, because they don’t like how certain people act or dress. The thing is, Scout doesn’t let Aunt Alexandra get to her, and that’s why I think Scout is the way she is. She doesn’t want people telling her what to do. Her strong mindedness keeps her getting through tough situations.
I grew up with a brother 2 years older than me and at one point I felt just like Scout had about Jem. My brother Dominic used to always play games with me and teach me how to do things. As he got older I realized that he didn’t want to spend as much time with me. Scout notices how Jem wants to be alone more often, because he wants to do “guy” things without her. It took me a while to understand that it wasn’t my fault that he wanted to be alone; it was because he was maturing and wanted space.
You always read stories about brothers and sisters fighting. To Kill a Mockingbird is like that too. Jem and Scout usually always get along, but there are times when they get angry with each other and want to fight. It always seems like the people you spend time with the most are the people you end up fighting with the most too. It’s just tough to always get along.
In our literary circle we discussed how characters in the book were changing. Jem was one of the ones who were changing the most. He’s in a stage where he’s not a little kid anymore but not yet a teenager. We also talked about Jem and Scout going to church with Calpurnia. To Aunt Alexandra, it sounded like they have committed a crime when it really wasn’t even bad.
I’ve learned that while growing up you watch people change, but you never really get to see the changes in yourself. Scout notices that her brother is getting older and wiser. What she doesn’t notice is that she is learning how to deal with her problems better than she used to.
