Food, Inc.

Before we watched the film Food Inc., I didn’t know that much about food.  Sure, I knew that a lot of it was unhealthy, and that not everything is “all natural” or “farm fresh”.  But after watching this film, I know so much more about food and where it actually comes from.  In this film, I noticed that most of the animals that are in the everyday foods that we eat, are treated poorly before becoming food.  They have tons of cows crammed into one small area, and tons of chickens in another small area.  The chickens are fed a certain thing to make them grow faster, and bigger.  Because of these two things, cows stand in their own manure, and chickens can barely walk more than a few steps because of how abnormally large they are.  Another thing that I learned from this film was that corn is in practically everything.  It is fed to cows, and it is also made into high fructose corn syrup and other things like that.  I never knew before that corn was in virtually all foods.  But, feeding corn to cows can help develop E.coli in the cows.  Poor cows!  I think that this film has made a small impact on my life.  For one thing, I know so much more about food and what happens to it.  But when it comes to eating these foods, nothing has changed.  My family still gets the same foods we got before I saw this film.  I think that food is an important subject to at least know about.  So many people have absolutely no idea where their  food comes from or what even happens to it.  Even from just watching a video, I am much more knowledgeable on the subject.  It could really help some people and maybe get them to be more conscious of what they eat.  Overall, this film was a great learning experience for me and I encourage other people to watch it as well.

The Secret of the Doll

Context:  Alexis Warren is trying to find the power source of Sarah, a girl who died long ago, and destroy it.  Sarah’s power source is an old doll, Sarah’s favorite when she was alive.  With this doll, she has possessed Kasey, Alexis’s sister, to try to take her revenge on her killers.  If Alexis succeeds, she can start to repair her broken relationship with her sister.
Setting: Warren household’s attic.
(Alexis climbs into the attic, looking for the doll, Sarah, the heart of all the problems in this house)
ALEXIS: “Where are you?!”
*silence*
SARAH: “You will never destroy me Alexis”
*Alexis travels towards the sound of the voice*
ALEXIS: “You can’t hide forever Sarah.  Eventually it will end for you; no matter what you do.”
*Alexis walks towards the back of the attic.  The attic door swings up.*
SARAH: “Or maybe, it will end for you.  As we speak, the fire downstairs is getting larger and traveling quickly.  It will be here in no time and you will be trapped in this attic.”
*Alexis quickens her search, looking around desperately*
SARAH: “Your time is running out.”
ALEXIS: “Stop messing around! I demand you show yourself!”
SARAH: “That would ruin the fun.”
*Alexis picks up a scrap of paper and reads aloud*
ALEXIS: “Home is where the heart is.  Home is where the heart is.  What does it mean?!”
*Alexis glances around, her gaze settling on the dollhouse in the corner*
ALEXIS: “Home is where the heart is.  The heart!  It’s in the house!”
SARAH: “Stay away! Don’t take another step!”
*Alexis dashes over to the dollhouse and flings it open.  There lies the half-broken and chipped mess of a doll with glowing green eyes.  It’s Sarah.  Alexis picks up the doll*
ALEXIS: Say goodbye Sarah! Your time destroying people’s lives is over!  Lies!  Anything you told my sister Kasey was an all-out lie.  It’s time….
(Staring into Sarah’s eyes, Alexis thinks aloud)
ALEXIS: “I must rescue this doll.  That’s all that matters.  I need a way out.  But, if I bring the doll out, Kasey will say that everything is the doll’s fault.  If only there was a way to keep the doll from Kasey……”
*Alexis starts pacing, still holding Sarah*
SARAH: Kill her.  Kill Kasey!
Alexis: “That is the only way to protect you Sarah.  Wait! You were mean to Kasey!  You almost killed her yourself! Why am I helping you?  What is going on?  Oh, no I must have fallen under your spell!  Snap out of it!!”
(The sound of a crackling fire grows louder)
*Alexis throws Sarah to the ground and snatches up an old baseball bat.  She brings the bat down on to Sarah until she is nothing but pieces.  The glow in the doll’s eyes disappears and Alexis backs away*
ALEXIS: “I have to get out of here!  The attic is about to go up in flames!”
*Alexis runs to the window and opens it.  Stepping into the window sill, she jumps for the nearby oak tree*
KASEY: “Alexis!  Come down, quickly!  The tree is going to start on fire really soon!”
 ALEXIS: “I’m trying Kasey!”
*Alexis tries to drop onto another branch seven feet below.  She catches it, but slips, now holding on by one arm.*
ALEXIS: “Help Kasey! I’m going to fall!!”
*Before Kasey can even move, Alexis slips off the branch and falls the remaining twenty five feet to the ground*
KASEY: “Alexis!  Oh my goodness!  Are you alright?  Don’t move okay?”
*A fireman comes rushing over with a stretcher*
FIREMAN: “Excuse me, miss”
*Kasey backs away as the fireman loads Alexis onto the stretcher.  He starts to move it away.  Alexis slowly opens her eyes.*
KASEY: “Alexis!”
FIREMAN: “Don’t worry, everything will be okay!”
ALEXIS: Kasey, I love you!  Don’t worry, I’ll be okay.”

All About Me!

As a high school student, I want to be the best that I can possibly be.  That isn’t always the easiest thing to do though.  I don’t like to do homework and studying is usually a bore.  Through first semester, I have learned how to make these things fun because they are things that I need to do to be the best that I can be.  One of my goals that I made at the beginning of first semester was to get and keep all A’s.  I learned first semester that you need to work hard to achieve those grades and it helps me achieve my other goal of being the best I can possibly be.  Some of my strengths in the classroom are working hard to get the task we are assigned done and working well with different people to accomplish a task.  A weakness of mine is staying focused but I have learned how to keep better focus during first semester.

Last semester, in English class specifically, I learned a lot.  The thing that I got the most help with was writing literary analysis’s for our independent reading blogs.  Since I got a lot of help with those, I learned things that helped me write better posts after that.  Also, relearning thesis statements and their importance helped even more with my writing.  One of my goals for this semester is to again, get all A’s.  Also, I want to make my writing skills stronger by continuing to write in English class.

In my free time, I love to play sports, play piano, take pictures and read.  My favorite sport is volleyball and I am playing on a team right now.  I have been taking piano lessons for a very long time and I still enjoy playing that instrument.  Right now, I am working a piece for Solo & Ensemble.  Taking pictures with friends is always a good time, but when I am by myself, I like to take silly pictures of my dog.  I also like to read a lot.  My favorite genre of book is mystery because sometimes it is fun to guess the ending and then find out if you are right or not when you finish the book.  I will read almost anything though, except for most fantasy books.  After school, there is a lot that I have to do, and as a result, I don’t much time to do these activities.  This is my reflection of me as a person, a learner, and a student.
