Nick,
I thought it was interesting how you described Pope Francis as unafriad to go outside of the traditional way past Popes have done things. By his action of wearing black rather than red shoes the Pope demonstrated his "simplicity and originality". I think it's important to aknowledge Pope Francis's differences from the resigned Pope Benedict. With the last Pope still alive, it puts pressure on Pope Francis to follow in his footsteps, but we must remember he does not have that obligation.

Nick, you are one hundred percent right. Living in America, especially in Wisconsin, makes it easy to tune out all the trouble and violence that fills countries elsewhere. That ability to maintain ignorance, and in a way innocence, may be a blessing or it might not be. The protection and shield we find from the outside world here in Wisconsin keeps us unaware. If we are unaware how can we help to work towards ending these troubles and violence? We can't, so maybe we should reach out of the walls of the fortress we have been hiding in and help change the world.

Very true. There is almost always the "role-model", but not always as the main character. The "too-good" characters are actually often very humorous to me, not in a bad way, but just because they are just too perfect and you know something is GOING to happen to them.
Also, To Kill a Mockingbird has been suggested to me many times. After reading this, I think I may just get around to reading it. :)

I love the way you made a connection between Hannah and Scout! It seems like in every book or story there is a "role model" character, someone who is almost too good to be true. That's what they seem like to me - and they definitely have some great character qualities and personality traits.
You made Without Mercy sound like a really good book, I'm gonna look into it. LOVED To Kill a Mockingbird :)

I think that despite all of the recent controversies surrounding the book, I still find myself looking up to the feat that Greg Mortenson has accomplished. Some of the controversies surrounding the book are outright trivial such as the fact that the events didn't quite take place in the same order. My point of view is that the schools that he put up for impoverished children serve as a testament to his goodwill and good hearted humanitarian work.

I read that book, too Eman. I thought it was inspiring. But now, I'm worried that I might have been misled. What do you think of this recent controversy surrounding that book (allegations that some of it might not be true and that the non profit organization might not be allocating funds appropriately)?

Hello Nick S!
I agree with your point that we should be able to choose whatever books we want to read because by doing so, we become more motivated to read.
I am quite the opposite- I like reading fiction books better than non-fiction, but I just got done with reading this non-fiction book called, Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, and it was amazing.
Do you have any suggestions for some interesting non-fiction books?

You've certainly done a lot of research :) I remember watching a TV show a while back about how this one guy (I believe his name was Jamie Oliver) went around to a bunch of local schools and how he tried changing the food they had originally been serving there. They had been letting the kids eat DISGUSTING stuff (It can't even be described as food) like processed or frozen meat that had been heated up or foods that had MOOOUNDS of calories hidden deep inside of their juicy and lovely exterior loveliness... It's amazing (more like disturbing) what schools don't tell you when it comes to nutrition. We have a health court in our school (probably the exact opposite of an ala carte) that serves, obviously, healthy (or at least healthIER) foods that kids can go and buy, but it isn't as commonly used because, well, it’s not what they'd prefer. Why buy yogurt from the health court when in the ala carte line is some juicy bacon and flavored chocolate milk that's awaiting you? And of course schools are gonna go and buy the cheaper food because the healthy food charges ONE HUNDRED TIMES MORE than the food that bloats your belly. It just doesn't make sense in my mind. OF COURSE obesity is a problem--who do you think is enforcing it!?!? The people ask why obesity is increasing, when the answer is right under their noses, wafting a little feather back and forth, giggling and singing in a haunting melody, "haha gotcha!" Politics and government and money are wound so tightly around our little ears and eyes that we can't see what the problem REALLY is and what's REALLY affected us the most. We are so blinded, so all we can do is SENSE that we're being taunted and whatnot by the main source--the very same source that shelters and envelopes our children.
